Using AI to Detect Colon Polyps?
The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer in the United States is approximately 4.3% with 90% of cases occurring after the age of 50. However, the incidence of colorectal cancer in younger adults is steadily increasing by 1-2% per year. Colon cancer begins as a polyp (a small growth of abnormal cells). The National Colon Polyp Study showed that removing certain types of polyps (adenomas) during colonoscopy reduces mortality by up to 50%. We now have the capability of using AI to enhance polyp detection during a colonoscopy. This reduces the chance of missing a polyp, which could go on to form colon cancer. The AI software scans the images during the procedure in real time, and highlights possible polyps, thus increasing polyp identification. This results in a more thorough examination, and more peace of mind.
